Like much of Michigan, Pontiac still has some work to do from an educational standpoint as just over two-thirds of residents achieve a high school diploma during the course of their lives, and roughly 10% attain a college degree. The area’s private schools are first rate. However, Pontiac High, which serves most of the township’s students struggled significantly on the 2011 MEAP exams. Those residents who attend college generally move elsewhere for their collegiate studies such as the state and national powerhouse, The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
According to a February 2012 article produced by Michigan’s The Morning Sun, students continue to struggle significantly on the reading and math portions of the state administered MEAP exam as certain districts reported only 7 to 8% of students were considered adequate at these subjects relative to the general population. These subjects can be the most difficult to teach, because they are contingent on skills that must first be developed where as other subjects such as history and some hard sciences generally require only memorization.
While teachers are often judged by the number of students who pass (score over a 65%), a tutor will always be judged by how well they help their students attack their expectations. At Parliament, passing is not enough. We truly expect each and every student who signs up with us to excel. While professional success requires more than just being a good worm, doing well in school directly unquestionably opens doors that would otherwise be closed. In essence, good grades put you in a position where your future is in your control.
The benefits of doing well in school are endless: better college and graduate school options, better job opportunities, and the foundation of personal and professional happiness. It is difficult to think of even one influential professional who did not have the capacity to do well in school. Even famous dropouts like Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and former Apple CEO Steve Jobs still earned a perfect SAT score and admission into UC Berkely, respectively. While one does not necessarily need to succeed in school to succeed professionally, a strong argument can be made that it is relatively impossible to succeed professionally if one lacks the capacity to succeed academically.
