Often referred to as the “Emerald City,” Eugene is known for its natural aesthetic beauty, abundance of outdoor recreational activities, thriving arts scene and adamant political activism. Founded in 1862 by Eugene Franklin Skinner, the city grew rapidly throughout the 1900s thanks to its booming timber industry. Today, it is Oregon’s second largest city with a population of about 156,000.

Several fires ravaged the city’s first post-secondary institute of higher learning, Columbia College, in the first few years of its fruition. Following the second fire, city officials decided not to rebuild the campus. As a result, demand for a new college led to the development of the University of Oregon in 1876. By 1878, just two years later, it saw its first graduating class take their diplomas and venture off into the post-college real world.

The University of Oregon is one of 108 universities in the U.S. categorized by the Carnegie Foundation as a RU/VH institute, which means it is a university with very high research activity. It is also the flagship university of the Oregon University System, offering over 250 degree programs to its enrollment body of some 24,000 students. Its academic reputation has grown over the years as a result of its highly ranked graduate programs in a plethora of subjects from Biology to Geological Sciences, Sports Marketing and more.
